Go Easy On Hydrangeas

People often wonder why their French hydrangeas fail to bloom after a spring pruning.  The problem is not with the plant, but rather the over zealousness of the pruner.  Most varieties of French hydrangeas produce the shoots that bear flowers only near the tips of the canes.  Canes that have flowered can be cut back immediately after the blooms fade, but don't cut back the whole plant to the ground.  Limit your pruning to removing only those spindly canes and tips that have been injured over the winter.
